The name “Tripura’ is perhaps derived from the name of the Goddess Tripureshwari of Bengal or it could have originated from the name of the ruling clan which ruled the state till its merger with the Indian Union on the 15th October,1949. It could also be a modification of the word “Tipra” (or Tuipara) which again means the dwellers of the territory bordered by the sea as the word “Tui” means water. Incidentally the contiguous landmass which was in Bengal under the British rule was known as Tripura where the Maharaja of the state had zamindari.
